5 Ways to Improve Your Backyard

Do you want to spruce up your backyard? Maybe you’re tired of staring at the same old scenery. Perhaps you want a new space to entertain guests. No matter the reason, there are plenty of ways you can improve your backyard to make it the place of your dreams.

1. Plant a Garden

A garden can be a great way to add color to your backyard. Start by looking at the space and creating a detailed plan. You’ll need to know where water sits and which areas get the most sunlight. Once you have a designated spot, start clearing it of weeds, twigs and grass. You’ll also need to decide which types of plants you’d like to include in your yard.

Are you thinking cacti and succulents? Perhaps you’re interested in something green and mystical, like a forest of bamboo? Maybe you want a practical garden filled with fruits and veggies your family can eat? If you’re new to gardening, consider low-maintenance plants that are easy to care for, such as ornamental grass, coneflowers, cosmos, agastache and hostas.

2. Build a Deck

If you and your family want to spend time outside, then a deck or patio is a necessity. This space is dedicated to relaxing, entertaining guests and enjoying a nice meal. You can use outdoor furniture to make the area more comfortable and string up twinkle lights to create a romantic ambiance.

When considering how to build a deck and what materials to use, ask yourself the following questions:

• Is your backyard sloping or uneven?
• Will the deck be free-standing or attached?
• How many pounds will the deck need to hold?
• How often will the deck need to be maintained?

3. Include a Kitchen

Do you love to entertain guests? Perhaps you want to bring the comfort of indoors outside? Either way, an outdoor kitchen can be a great way to improve your backyard. It can complement your home’s architecture and landscape, with a size and scope that can be adjusted based on budget.

Start with a grill and outdoor preparation space, such as countertops or an island. Common materials include concrete, marble and stainless steel. Add a kitchen bar to keep drinks cold and on-hand. Include a sink to make dinner prep easier. Improvements can be made as you decide which features are most important to you.

4. Add a Fire Pit

Build a fire pit so you and your family can enjoy the backyard day and night. Adults can use the space to relax and socialize while kids make s’ mores and roast hot dogs. If you want the fire pit on your newly-built deck, remember to place a fire-resistant mat down first.

Once you find the right fire pit, line the bottom with sand to protect from extreme heat. You can also add lava rocks for an additional layer of protection. If you want to cook with your fire pit — a must for any backyard makeover — be sure to add a grill grate, which converts your fire pit into the perfect spot to cook hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and more.

5. Construct a Treehouse

A treehouse, no matter the design, gives a backyard character. The style can be bare bones, an excellent place for the kids to play and create imaginative adventures. It could also be a fun spot for adults, a hangout spot complete with armchairs and a built-in bar.

Be sure to do your homework before jumping into a treehouse build. Draw up plans and research local building codes to make sure you don’t need a permit. A professional builder can double-check your design to ensure the structure is sound. If built properly, a treehouse can last for decades.

Is your backyard boring? Do away with the typical shrubs and create a space your neighbors will rave about. From a newly installed deck to a custom-built treehouse, there are plenty of projects you can take on to improve your backyard.
